Planetary-Scale Views on a Large Instant-Messaging Network
We find that the graph is well-connected and robust to node removal. We investigate on a planetary-scale the oft-cited report that people are separated by “six degrees of separation” and find that the average path length among Messenger users is 6.6.

誰かと誰かをつなぐには、6ステップあればいい、という、かつてミルグラムが提示した考え。その後、ほんとうかなあという話もあったけれど、このほど、マイクロソフトのメッセンジャーでの世界でのやりとりを分析したところ(メッセージを送りあっている人は知り合いと考えられる)、ある人とある人を、メッセンジャーでつながっている人をたどってつなぐには、平均6.6ステップでつながることがわかったと。
1ヶ月にやりとりされた、2億4000万人による300億のメッセージを分析。1億8000万ノード(接点)、13億エッジ(枝)。ちなみに、同姓より異性とのやりとりの方がより頻繁で、時間も長かったって。
