就学前の子どもでもヘビを見ると怖がる。ということは、社会的に身についたというより、なんらかの遺伝的な要素があるんじゃないかと。（まあ、ヘビを振り回している子もいるけどね、近所には）
以前、あれは何だったかな、テレビ番組で、サルがヘビを怖がっているのを見て、霊長類はどこかでヘビに対してよほど恐れる理由を持っているのか、と考えたことがある。毒蛇への恐怖というのはわかるけど、それにしても、あの生理的といってよい嫌悪感はどこから出てくるのか。考えてみると不思議。
