Here we demonstrate that retrotransposon-derived Rtl1 (retrotransposon-like 1), also known as Peg11 (paternally expressed 11), is essential for maintenance of the fetal capillaries, and that both its loss and its overproduction cause late-fetal and/or neonatal lethality in mice.

「Peg11」と呼ばれる遺伝子が胎盤の毛細血管の形成に欠かせないことを実証。ところでこの遺伝子、感染したウィルスからDNAに組み込まれたらしい。
ウィルス進化説なんてのもあるけど、こういう話を聞くと、進化の不思議にあらためて気が遠くなる思いがする。
